St. Elmo Ghost Town to the Famed Alpine Tunnel
Want to get a taste of the high alpine, but on railroad-grade 4wd roads? The St. Elmo to the Alpine Tunnel ride is for you! Starting in St. Elmo, one of Colorado’s best-preserved historic ghost towns, we climb the old railroad grade gradually away from St. Elmo and through the old mining towns of Romley and Hancock. In Hancock we turn up the famous Alpine Tunnel railroad grade. This rail trail was once one of the most ambitious railroad tunnel projects during the Colorado gold rush days. The line was closed in 1910 and today we have a beautiful, high mountain ride on a wide trail surrounded by jagged peaks and expansive wilderness. The old railroad grade ends at the caved-in entrance to the historic tunnel. The ride back to St. Elmo is all downhill.
