If you’re new to the mountains or simply want to do a ride where you don’t have to pedal uphill much, one of our Downhill Rides may be the perfect thing for you.
We now offer special downhill mountain bike rides entirely on dirt roads, meaning that you’ll be letting gravity do the work most of the time. We shuttle in a comfortable vehicle to the top of these rides and follow country roads back down into the valleys below. We may encounter a short hill or two, but nothing long or difficult. These rides are not downhill rides on singletrack or difficult terrain, but rather rides suited for anyone from children to grandparents.
They are also a journey into the history of our area. Both of our downhill specialty rides visit nearby ghost towns, utilize the old western railroad grades that crossed the mountains in the days before roads, offer the chance to see wildlife and of course, give you huge views of the mountains, valleys and forests that makes the Upper Arkansas River Valley such an enjoyable place.
The Alpine Tunnel down Chalk Creek Valley visits the famed old railroad tunnel site and then drops down through the well-preserved ghost town of Saint Elmo. You can also opt to visit hot springs at the end of the ride.
The ride across Aspen Ridge passes through one of the largest Aspen tree groves in the area, a glowing golden sight now to be missed when the Aspen trees are changing colors. We then drop down through the ghost town of Turret and finish in downtown Salida.
